Jayne Smith, partner and head of wills and probate at Rothera Bray, was recently presented with gold, silver and bronze certificates along with the rest of the team to celebrate the amounts raised by the firm’s Lace Market, Beeston and Wollaton branches. The department has been offering the free will service to people aged 55 and over in Nottingham and the surrounding area for the past 20 years.

A legacy is a gift in a will that is paid before the balance of the estate is distributed and can either be a sum of money or a specific gift, such as household contents.  Some people choose to leave a legacy to Cancer Research UK whereas others choose to leave the residue of their estate to the charity.

As part of the service, Rothera Bray gives advice and support for those wishing to write a will or update an existing one, together with guidance for those wishing to leave a legacy gift for Cancer Research UK.

Jayne said: “Leaving a legacy gift in your will, whether money or another asset is an amazing contribution that people can make and has such an impact on the work of Cancer Research in beating cancer.

“Rothera Bray have been involved in the charity’s Free Will scheme since 1996 and we think it is a fantastic service, letting over 55s create a will for free whilst also giving them the opportunity to leave a gift to the charity if they wish. We are thrilled that through the scheme we have been able to help Cancer Research UK raise nearly £3 million through legacy gifts.”

Neil Antcliffe, Legacy Partnership Manger at Cancer Research who presented the awards, said: “It has been fantastic working in partnership with Rothera Bray Solicitors. Through offering Cancer Research UK’s Free Will Service Rothera Bray have been very supportive of our life-saving research. Whenever their clients express a desire to support us, their staff act with great sensitivity as they explain the various options and allow individuals or families to make the right choice in their own good time.

“It’s quite astonishing to think that by simply combining enthusiasm with the highest professional standards Jayne & her team have helped secure over £2.8 million worth of legacy gifts since joining the scheme in 1996, which will go a long way towards helping our scientists, doctors and nurses to beat cancer sooner.”

The charity receives no government funding for its research and relies heavily on the generosity of people leaving gifts in their wills. Over a third of its research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer is funded through supporters leaving a legacy to the charity.
