It aims to raise awareness of sexual abuse and violence and provides support to survivors and victims by signposting them to appropriate specialist support services, and allows society in general to recognise the upsetting abundance of victims and survivors that have been subjected to sexual abuse or violence.
Statistics show that those in the age bracket of 16-24 years old and who are full-time students have a much higher chance of being victims/survivors of sexual assaults and/or abuse than those in any other occupations or age brackets.
As such, many universities are raising awareness, creating campaigns for those who have been directly or indirectly affected to collectively come together, supporting one another and more importantly creating a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Abuse specialist Seetal Patel of Rothera Bray’s Serious Injury team said: ‘The overwhelming support initiated by this campaign allows those survivors or victims who have not felt able to come forward, to do so in a safe environment, and take that further step of reporting offences to the police, so justice can be sought’.
This support is particularly important given the recent outcry regarding the delays with the justice system, with victims and survivors being subjected to unnecessary and distressing delays either because their case is awaiting trial or awaiting sentencing.
The most important takeaway from the week is for those survivors and victims to remember:
IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.
YOU ARE NOT TO BLAME.
