The theme of this year’s Road Safety Week: ‘Let’s talk about speed!’ aims to raise awareness of the dangers of excess or inappropriate speed on our roads.
Brake’s analysis of the latest road casualty statistics shows that 30,707 people were killed or seriously injured on UK roads in 2022, a 10% increase from the previous year’s statistics. It also found that 1538 people were killed in crashes on roads in Britain in 2022 where speed was a contributory factor, a 15% increase from statistics taken in 2021.
Despite these frightening figures, a public opinion survey carried out by Brake found that 34% of the 2,000 drivers surveyed said that they sometimes or often drive faster than the speed limit.
