Press Statement: Nottingham Attacks, 13 June 2023

Victim: Wayne Birkett

Date: 25th January 2024, Post Sentencing

Wayne Birkett was hit by a van which drove into him intentionally in Nottingham city centre in the early hours of 13 June 2023.

As a result of the attack, Wayne was seriously hurt with life-changing injuries, both physically and mentally, and spent weeks recovering in hospital. With multiple broken bones and a serious head injury, Wayne’s life will never be the same. He will require extensive rehabilitation and care for many years to come.

Following the sentencing today, Wayne believes that he and the other victims and families have been let down by the system that is meant to protect them.

With the premeditated planning, the collection of lethal weapons and the brutality of the attack, Wayne believes that Valdo Calocane knew what he was doing. He massacred three people and tried to kill a further three, of which Wayne was one.

The sentence is disappointing and uncertain and Wayne, alongside his solicitor Greg Almond at Rothera Bray, believes a public inquiry is required.
