What is Action for Brain Injury Week?

Taking place from the 20th – 26th May 2024 the theme for this year’s Action for Brain Injury Week is ‘A Life Re-Written’.

This year’s campaign will demonstrate how brain injuries can affect anyone at any time, often throwing lives into chaos, forcing the sufferers to completely alter their life goals, and sometimes even permanently changing their identity.

Positive stories of accomplishment in the face of adversity will be shared by brain injury survivors who have successfully rebuilt their lives, relationships and careers.

Understanding Brain Injuries

There are two main types of brain injury, both of which have different symptoms and require distinct medical intervention.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is caused by trauma to the head. The main examples of head trauma being falls, road traffic accidents or assaults.

The effects of a TBI can be extremely wide ranging and mainly depend on the type, location and severity of the trauma to the brain itself.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) describes an injury which has occurred or been acquired since birth. Whilst this can include TBIs, it also includes injuries which do not arise from trauma including brain tumours, strokes, brain haemorrhages and encephalitis to name key examples.

Common Brain Injury Conditions: –

  • Concussions and Mild Head Injuries.
  • Stroke – An emergency condition where the blood supply to the brain is disrupted.
  • Brain Aneurysm – The wall of an artery or blood vessel in the brain is weakened which causes it to swell.
  • Brain Haemorrhage – Bleeding in or around the brain.
  • Brain Tumour – An abnormal mass of tissue inside the skull.
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Exposure to Carbon Monoxide can lead to hypoxic brain injury due to the brain’s oxygen supply being disturbed.
  • Encephalitis – An inflammation of the brain, most likely caused by an infection.
  • Hydrocephalus – A buildup of fluid within the skull which applies pressure to the brain.
  • Hypoxic and Anoxic Brain Injury – The oxygen supply to the brain is interrupted, which in turn disturbs the functioning of the brain. Irreversible damage can quickly cause deterioration.
  • Meningitis – A bacterial, viral or fungal infection that causes inflammation in the protective membranes that line the brain.

Brain Injury Support Available

Navigating daily life and its challenges can be extremely difficult after a TBI or with an ABI. However, there are many forms of comprehensive support available to assist wherever and with whatever necessary. Here are some sources of support:

Medical Care

  • Immediate medical attention is crucial for individuals with TBIs and ABIs. This may be inclusive of emergency treatment, surgery, rehabilitation and ongoing clinical management.
  • Rehabilitation programs offer the opportunity to increase independence through cognitive therapies, physical therapies, counselling and other interventions. Rehabilitation is vital to improving both independence and quality of life.

Emotional Support

  • Learning to cope with a brain injury and its lasting effects can cause emotional hardship. Counselling, support groups and specialist charities offer invaluable emotional support and encouragement.
  • Mental health professionals and clinicians can help sufferers and their families address coping mechanisms and strategies to manage their condition daily.

Legal Assistance

In some cases, a brain injury can occur as a result of negligence or wrongful actions of another party. Proceeding with a legal claim may be essential to ensure that the correct compensation is received for your injury, and that interim payments are secured during the course of your claim to allow for rehabilitation, aids and equipment and any other care or support which you may need.
