What are HR services?
HR services cover every aspect in the employee lifecycle, from the recruitment process, employee training, performance and appraisals and staff health and wellbeing to payroll, absence management, grievances and disciplinary proceedings to redundancy.
What is the difference between HR and Employment Law?
HR deals with the management of employees through the duration of their employment. HR professionals usually work with line managers and business owners to write and advise on policies, contracts, procedures and processes, ensuring that they are legally compliant but also compliment the culture and goals of the company.
In comparison, an employment law solicitor will only be able to advise on legislation and can draft up contracts and employee handbooks ensuring these are legally compliant. If an employee needs a settlement agreement then only an employment law solicitor can write and advise on this. Likewise, if an employee takes their employer to the employment tribunal and needs representation then an employment law solicitor will be required rather than an HR professional.
What is an HR audit?
An HR audit looks into various aspects of a company’s HR policies and procedures, ensuring these adhere to government and industry rules and guidelines and providing recommendations to safeguard the company and its employees. An HR audit might look at a company’s:
- Recruitment process
- Onboarding process
- Employee benefits
- Appraisal process
- Key policies and documents such as employment contracts and company handbook
- Leaver process
Do companies have to have HR?
In the UK it is not a legal requirement for companies to have a HR manager or HR department but without one it will be the responsibility of managers to oversee all aspects of HR from recruiting and promoting staff to dealing with grievances and disciplinaries.
