International Probate
If you own assets in more than one country it can be extremely complex and time-consuming to administer your estate without the help of someone experienced in dealing with international probate.
In some cases probate, which is the process of administering the estate, needs to be obtained in all the countries where assets are located. It is also important to be aware that some countries do not recognise UK processes such as estate administration, or their laws take other factors into consideration when deciding how the estate should be distributed, which can make the process of dealing with the estate even more complicated.
At Rothera Bray we have dedicated members of our private client team who specialise in dealing with estates with foreign assets and can manage all aspects of an estate, from getting a Grant of Probate and organising and collecting property to paying inheritance tax and passing on inheritance.
Why use Rothera Bray for International Probate?
We can deal with a range of cases, from straightforward assets to complex high-value estates with trusts.
We can advise on estates where the deceased was a UK national with assets abroad or a foreign national with UK assets.
We have members of the team who are fluent in different languages, in particular French and Spanish.
We can work with lawyers based abroad to help them apply for a UK Grant of Probate.
We can also advise you on tax and trust services.
We can advise on heritage properties, international trusts and international wealth management structures.
We work with international solicitors, estate agents, tax planners and courts.
We can advise on drafting an international Will if you have assets abroad.
We can help with tracing assets
We can advise on tax matters including local taxes, inheritance tax and capital gains tax.

This has been one of the most horrible years of my life, and going through a divorce is not something I would wish on anyone. But if you do have to go through it, it makes a huge difference knowing that you have a supportive lawyer to work with and that was definitely my experience of working with Sarah Gill. What really stood out for me was how well Sarah listened and heard me...She was also excellent at explaining the key background areas of law I needed to understand as I went into mediation. More than anything, Sarah’s way of working felt like a genuine partnership. I know this might sound cheesy, but it truly felt like she had my back. That support meant I could make informed decisions about my future during an incredibly difficult time. I honestly cannot thank you enough, Sarah, for all your help. I would highly recommend reaching out to her if you are looking for a solicitor who is supportive, compassionate, and highly responsive.

We hadn’t moved home in over 12 years, and the process has changed significantly in that time. What could easily have become overwhelming was made completely manageable thanks to Julekha and her outstanding team. From the very first conversation, nothing was ever too much trouble. Every question no matter how small was answered clearly and patiently, and I could always rely on Julekha to come back to me the very same day. Her communication, attention to detail, and unwavering professionalism gave us total confidence at every stage....I cannot recommend Julekha highly enough. If you want a solicitor who is proactive, responsive, and truly committed to getting things done right, look no further. They were exceptional, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything they did for us.

I’m glad I had Emily guide me through all the way through what has been the hardest part of my life, been around 3 years and today I got the decision I never thought I’d get. Again props to Emily for guiding and road mapping what has been a difficult time. Sorting out court dates, prepping for court, offering support and advice. It couldn’t of been done without you Emily so we as a family will be forever grateful.

I recently used Julekha as my solicitor for my house move, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the service. From start to finish, everything went smoothly thanks to her professionalism, clear communication, and attention to detail. She kept me updated at every stage, answered all my questions quickly, and made the whole process feel easy and stress-free. What can often be a complicated and overwhelming experience ended up being straightforward because of her efficiency and support. I’m genuinely grateful for all her help and would highly recommend Julekha to anyone looking for a reliable, supportive, and highly competent solicitor.

Breakthrough on Government’s Employment Rights Bill: what employers need to know about unfair dismissal
There has finally been a breakthrough in the deadlock surrounding the Government’s Employment Rights Bill (“ERB”), which has been the subject of significant back-and-forth between the House of Commons and the House of Lords in recent weeks. In particular, there has been much debate around the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims but it now appears that a compromise has been reached to enable the ERB to pass without further undue delay.

2025 Autumn Budget: what could it mean for you?
The 2025 Autumn Budget has brought real changes for property owners, landlords, and families – but not the sweeping tax overhaul that many expected. While chancellor Rachel Reeves left stamp duty unchanged, she declared a new annual ‘council-tax-style’ surcharge for £2m+ homes, higher income tax on rents from 2027, and incremental updates to capital gains tax (CGT) and inheritance tax (IHT).
